CUBIC ZIRCONIA (CZ) -- discovered in 1892 -- is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). CZ is hard, optically flawless, usually colorless, but can be made in a variety of colors.

Due to its low cost, durability, and visual likeness to diamond, Cubic Zirconia is gemologically & economically the most important competitor for diamonds since commercial production began in 1976. Its main synthetic gemstone competitor is the more recently cultivated "moissanite."

DENSITY: CZ has a specific gravity of 5.6-6.0 -- 1.6 times that of diamond.
HARDNESS: CZ is relatively hard at 8-8.5 vs. 10 for diamond.
REFRACTIVITY: CZ is high at 2.15-2.18 vs. 2.42 for diamond.
LUSTER: CZ is brilliant at 0.058-0.066 vs. only 0.044 for diamond.
COLOR: CZ is often entirely colorless; equal to a perfect "D" on diamond's color grading (only the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless, most have a tinge of yellow or brown).
CUT: CZ can be cut differently from diamonds; facet edges can be rounded or "smooth".

YELLOW / WHITE / ROSE GOLD: The purity of gold is measured in karats. Pure gold measures 24 karats but is too soft to be used effectively in jewelry. So it is alloyed with other metals (silver, copper, nickel, and zinc) to increase its strength & durability. Common alloy measurements are 18 karat (75% gold), 14 karat (58%), & 10 karat (47.7%). In the United States, the lowest legal karat limit for the metal to still be considered gold is 10 karats. A higher karat measurement indicates a greater value of the jewelry piece. Gold jewelry should always be stamped with the karat mark; either 18k, 14k, or 10k (European markings; 750, 585, 470, respectively). To keep gold jewelry shining & scratch-free; 1. Avoid contact with chlorine & other harsh chemicals. 2. Do not wear during rough work. 3. Store in a fabric-lined jewelry box or pouch. 4. Clean with warm water & mild soap.

HORSE PINS
We love pins... Gals & Guys who especially like metal pins! They are portable. Rather than buy "branded" fashions, select pins which represent YOU and place them on various hats. From brimmed hats, fedoras, cloches, and especial plain baseball caps, PINS CAN MAKE YOUR HAT.
