SOTTILE PARK vs SOTTILE PARK ONLINE WORLDWIDE -- "S*POW!"

Sottile Park is a main street pedestrian park.

It is a public park for all to enjoy by
City of Pittsfield Rules.

The park is named after Anthony W. Sottile Sr.
City Auditor -- Civic & Church Leader -- Family Man

Being built atop a bridge over CSX rail lines,
it is dominated by brick decking and trellises,
and of course, railroad tracks below.

Sottile Park is also on the former site of the
Berkshire Evening Eagle's
(as named back in our youth)
Community Bulletin Board.

Bulletin boards played an important part
in the delivery of news "back-in-the-day"
before home delivery of newspapers...
and surely, today's Internet.

For this reason,
Sottile Park Online Worldwide
privately carries on the grand tradition
of disseminating knowledge through links
news, views, and of course,
other good stuff.

We do not edit it... we offer links to it
at the highest level possible for you
to select what you want to read.

As visitors will see by its top links placement,
our focus is on free education and knowledge.
Our parents' sacrifice provided us this gift.
So, SPOW Links Library is their legacy, not ours.
We are but a conduit paying forward their gift.

HISTORY OF COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARDS
Ancient Times to Present

Community Bulletin Boards have a rich history,
evolving from ancient public communication forms to modern digital kiosks & spaces.

Ancient Origins:

Early civilizations used different methods to share public announcements. Examples include town criers, public square postings, and carving announcements on stone tablets or monuments. The Roman Republic used albae, white-washed wooden boards, to post public notices. These notices included election results, gladiator game schedules, and legal decrees.

Evolution Through History:

Medieval Europe used stone notice boards in public squares to display edicts. >>> In 12th century Britain, churches used wooden boards, called parochial boards, for announcements.>>> As literacy expanded, notice boards became more prevalent in Britain. They posted advertisements and public announcements in high-traffic areas. >>> The 19th and 20th centuries saw advancements in notice board materials and technologies, such as cork and paper.>>> George Brooks patented the corkboard as a bulletin board in 1925. This was a shift toward easily customizable and pinnable surfaces.

The Information Age:

In 1978, Ward Christensen and Randy Suess launched the first dial-up BBS. This marked the entry of the bulletin board concept into the digital realm. These systems allowed users to connect and share information, creating early online communities. Digital signage displays have begun to replace traditional bulletin boards, offering real-time information. Websites like Pinterest demonstrate the evolution of the bulletin board concept into online platforms.

Contemporary Relevance:

Traditional bulletin boards remain valuable for community engagement in places like schools and libraries. Some systems integrate physical and digital elements. Electronic bulletin boards with physical pinning surfaces show the evolution of these communication tools.

The journey of Community Bulletin Boards from ancient information sharing methods to modern digital platforms highlights their enduring role as a means of public communications.
