The American Hotel once stood at the Corner of Columbus and North Street, 
directly across from Sottile Park.

The above crowd had gathered to see Rough Rider, Teddy Roosevelt, who came "stumping" through Pittsfield for his presidential election.  During this trip, one of his body guards was killed in an automobile accident on South Street near the Pittsfield Country Club.  Roosevelt was famous for his inspiring wisdoms.  He valued EFFORT, SELF-RELIANCE, and INTEGRITY.

Back In The Day

Across from Sottile Park, on North Street and on the south side of Columbus Avenue was the City's Railroad Depot  Not surprising,  there is a street just south of Sottile Park off North called Depot Street which gives access to the area.  In fact, the tire marks that you see to the left of the photo are replaced today by a private driveway.
