Facinators & Cocktails
A fascinator is a millinery headpiece. In the '90s, "fascinator"
became the term for designs, inspired by the small 1960s cocktail
hats that perched upon the highly coiffed hairstyles of the time.
A fascinator's decorative design is attached to a band or clip. It
sometimes incorporates a base to resemble a miniature hat; then it's
called a hatinator. Hatinators are favored by Catherine, Duchess of
Cambridge, a.k.a. Kate Middleton. At her wedding to Prince William
in April 2011, many female guests arrived wearing them.
Today, a fascinator may be worn where formal hats once were. They
are particularly popular at premium horse-racing events, such as the
Kentucky Derby, Grand National, and Melbourne Cup. However, in 2012
Royal Ascot stated that women must wear hats, not fascinators, as
part of their tightening the dress code in Royal Ascot's Royal
Enclosure.
